Penstemon spectabilis - Showy Penstemon
Penstemon spectabilis is native to the Coast Ranges of Southern California. The Showy Penstemon grows to 3-6 feet depending on garden conditions. Penstemon spectabilis grows in full sun to light shade. Penstemon spectabilis grows in rocky streambanks and canyons. In garden settings with heavier soil Penstemon spectabilis should be planted on a slope or raised above the surrounding grade to provide drainage. Penstemon spectabilis blooms with purple flowers from late winter in the south through the Spring months. Penstemon spectabilis is a larval food source for the Common Buckeye and the Variable Checkerspot Butterfly.
