Penstemon heterophyllus grows in full sun, often in disturbed firebreaks and trail margins. Foothill Penstemon requires decent drainage and Summer dry periods. Penstemon heterophyllus is Winter hardy into single digits. Penstemon heterophyllus is a larval food source for the Variable Checkerspot and Common Buckeye Butterflies.
