Penstemon heterophyllus - Foothill Penstemon
Penstemon heterophyllus has a long blooming season and is quite variable in the leaf habit and flower shape. The Foothill Penstemon has tubular purple flowers. Penstemon heterophyllus is quite drought tolerant once established. Butterflies and hummingbirds are attracted to the Foothill Penstemon flowers. Penstemon heterophyllus grows in full sun, often in disturbed firebreaks and trail margins. Foothill Penstemon requires decent drainage and Summer dry periods. Penstemon heterophyllus is Winter hardy into single digits. Penstemon heterophyllus is a larval food source for the Variable Checkerspot and Common Buckeye Butterflies.
