Penstemon Margarita BOP
Penstemon Margarita BOP has an even longer blooming period than its parents. Penstemon Margarita BOP is a hybrid including Penstemon heterophyllus. The flowers of Margarita BOP are darker hued. While you might be able to call it blue, in most light conditions Margarita BOP seems pretty purple to me. Penstemon Margarita BOP is drought tolerant and will still bloom in half shade. For a native California plant hybrid whose parents live on dry South exposures in the chaparral, Penstemon Margarita BOP is remarkably tolerant of garden conditions. Heavy soils and overzealous watering will eventually do the plants in but with even moderate drying periods between irrigation cycles Penstemon Margarita BOP holds its own. Penstemon Margarita BOP blooms from mid to late Spring and repeats into Fall. Penstemon Margarita BOP grows 18" tall and is typically a little wider than tall. Plants repeat bloom best with the spent flower spikes removed. Penstemon Margarita BOP attracts the Variable Checkerspot and is a potential larval food source for the Common Buckeye Butterfly and could be a nice addition to your butterfly garden.
