Penstemon eatonii - Firecracker Penstemon
Penstemon eatonii forms dense clumps of foliage 12-18 inches tall and wide the red flowers extend in columnar sprays to 3 feet, the grey foliage mounds to about a foot tall. The Firecracker Penstemon blooms from late winter deep into Spring. Penstemon eatonii is not particular about soil types, but it is critical that drainage is excellent and Summers are fairly dry. Penstemon eatonii is native to the desert portions of California in the Creosote and Pinon Juniper habitats. Firecracker Penstemon is a great addition to the Hummingbird and Butterfly Garden providing larval food for the Variable Checkerspot and Common Buckeye Butterflies.
