Pelargonium fragrans - Nutmeg Geranium
Pelargonium fragrans, the Nutmeg Geranium was the first of the species geraniums to arrive in our area. This hardy perennial Pelargonium has been a mainstay ever since. The gray leaves and white flowers of Pelargonium fragrans will brighten up a garden most of the year near the coast. The heaviest blooming for the Nutmeg geranium is in the Spring and Fall. Pelargonium fragrans is worthy of its name. It the foliage that has such a nice fragrance. The Nutmeg Geranium grows about 1 foot tall and 2 feet wide. Pelargonium fragrans is tolerant of most garden conditions except soggy soil and shade. And oh, Pelargonium fragrans is pretty drought tolerant too. Nutmeg Geranium is damaged by temperatures in the mid 20°s F and is killed by temperatures in the low 20°s F. The Nutmeg geranium has been used for flavoring jellies, vinegars and fruit dishes.
