Mimulus cardinalis - Cardinal Monkey Flower, Scarlet Monkey Flower
Mimulus cardinalis is a great wetland plant that can find its way in many gardens. Mimulus cardinalis is the perfect plant for the low swampy margin of a lawn or just a boggy location in the yard. Mimulus cardinalis is a streamside native. It will grow in sun or shade as long as there is enough moisture. The crown of the Scarlet Monkey Flower needs to be above the waterline and then it can grow in a pond setting as well. Scarlet Monkey Flower plants go dormant in the Winter. The Scarlet Monkey Flower blooms with red flowers nearly continuously from late spring until well into the Fall. I divide my Mimulus cardinalis plants in the winter while they are dormant. Mimulus is a larval host for the Checkerspot and Common Buckeye Butterflies
