Calochortus clavatus var clavatus is native to grasslands, chaparral and foothill woodlands of the Coast Ranges. This photo was taken at 4000 feet above Fillmore in a clay soil grassland setting. When much of the landscape is starting to look like Summer is settig in the yellow flowers really stand out. In cultivation Calochortus clavatus var clavatus will require a dry Summer.
