Ceanothus Gentian Plume ~ Gentian Plume California Lilac

Ceanothus Gentian Plume is a large fast growing shrub and can be used as a small tree growing 15-20 feet tall and wide. The fragrant dark blue flowers are pruduced in the late Winter and early Spring. Ceanothus Gentian Plume is similar if not related to Ceanothus cyaneus, the Lakeside California Lilac native to the San Diego area. Ceanothus Gentian Plume is drought tolerant once established though it prefers to be near water 10-15 feet fro groundwater or an irrigated area. Long term survival odds are improved by limiting Summer water to a couple of artificial monsoons and planting in an area with good drainage. Ceanothus can live to 25 years in exceptional conditions but typically live 10 years or so. Ceanothus Gentian Plume will grow best in full sun. Deer are not generally attracted to Ceanothus, but if a deer is hungry enough they will eat just about anything organic. Ceanothus Gentian Plume is hardy to the low teens. Ceanothus Gentian Plume is a host plant for the Western Tussock Moth Caterpillar, Hedgerow Hairstreak, California Common Ringlet, and the Pale Tiger Swallowtail and an early season nectar source for the Spring Azure and Monarch Butterfly.
