Achillea millefolium The Beacon * The Beacon Yarrow
The soft green leaves of Achillea The Beacon will tolerate foot traffic. Traffic is not so good for the flowers but brings up the scent of the fragrant foliage. The Achillea The Beacon flowers are a brilliant red with yellow centers. Achillea The Beacon will bloom in Spring and much of the Summer. The flowering season can readily be extended by removing the spent flower stalks. Yarrows are hardy in a significant drought but like a little water now and again and will look much better for it. I use Achillea The Beacon in a perennial border or massed to give a brilliant hot spot for a garden with warm colors. Achillea millefolium varieties make an excellent grass substitute for a lawn and germinate readily from seed. Achillea The Beacon is a nectar source for the Variable Checkerspot Butterfly Northern White Skipper, Mormon Metalmark, California Common Ringlet, and the Painted Lady Butterfly and is a great addition to the butterfly garden.
