Silene laciniata - Indian Pink, Cardinal Catchfly
Silene laciniata is found throughout California, the subspecies major is found in the coastal sage scrub and chaparral communities in Southern California. Silene laciniata can grow in a variety of soils. Indian Pink will grow where there is strong indirect light or often in the shade of other shrubs.Silene laciniata is great for the hummingbird garden. In the garden Indian Pink tends to need support, plants prefer good drainage and a relatively dry summer. I mix Silene laciniata with other plants so the red flowers can use them for support. Silene laciniata blooms through the Spring months.
