Scilla peruviana - Peruvian Lily, Portuguese Squill
Scilla peruviana, the Peruvian Lily, is a Spring knockout with its long lasting blue flowers. In our area Scilla peruviana needs little or no help. The species name is a bit misleading, Scilla peruviana is native to South Western Europe and Northern Africa the name applied by Linneaus because the plants he recieved were from a ship named Peru. Regardless Scilla peruviana does grow quite well in Peru and the Carribean too. The Portuguese Squill was imported early and has naturalized in much of this area. Well drained soil, or at least a slope, minimal summer water, and some inland shade are all helpful for success with in your garden. We have had volunteers, but Scilla peruviana has been a good garden citizen. Peruvian Lily plants are hardy into the teens.
