Scilla hispanica, Hyacinthoides hispanica - Spanish Bluebell, Wood Hyacinth
Scilla hispanica, often now called Hyacinthoides hispanica, the Spanish Bluebell or Wood Hyacinth, is a Spring knockout with its long lasting blue flowers. In our area Scilla hispanica needs little or no help naturalizing easily. The Portuguese Squill was imported early and has naturalized in much of this area. Well drained soil, or at least a slope, minimal summer water, and some inland shade are all helpful for success with Scilla hispanica naturalizing in your garden. We have had likely seeded volunteers, but Scilla hispanica has generally been a good garden citizen. Bulbs do offset quickly and even if you think you have removed them all or your pot of them might have died Scilla hispanica often lives on only showing up the next Spring. Spanish Bluebell plants are hardy into the teens.
