Scabiosa ochroleuca - Yellow Pincushion Flower
Scabiosa ochroleuca might be considered a pest if it weren't so pretty. The Yellow Pincushion Flower readily starts from seed. Scabiosa ochroleuca foliage grows up to a foot tall and spreads to about a foot and a half. The pale yellow flowers extend about a foot beyond the foliage. The flowers rapidly dry and must be deadheaded regularly to keep the plants blooming. Fortunately the Yellow Pincushion Flower is easy to pull if it wanders beyond where you want it. Scabisoa ochroleuca grows well in full sun and is tolerant of most soils, though not particularly tolerant of soggy conditions. The Yellow Pincushion Flower is Winter hardy to zone 4. The Painted Lady, Gray Hairstreak, Variable Checkerspot Gulf Frittilary, White Checkered Skipper, and Western Tiger Swallowtail will drop by for a sip of nectar if they are around.
