Buddleia davidii Black Knight - Butterfly Bush
Butterfly bush is a common epithet that carries a great deal of popularity. I like using the dark purple blooms of Buddleia Black Knight in the garden. They contrast richly with the grey foliage. The name Butterfly ... can be properly applied to several plants including Clerodendrum ugandense, Asclepias tuberosa and any of the rest of the Buddleia's. I am sure that this list is not complete. Buddleia Black Knight attracts the Monarch, Gulf Fritillary, Pale Tiger Swallowtail, Western Tiger Swallowtail, Red Admiral, Mournful Duskywing, and Umber Skipper Butterfly and is a great choice for a butterfly or hummingbird garden in a hot Summer climate. The Buddleia Black Knight plants can easily get to be 10 feet tall by the second season. Buddleia Black Knight can be pruned very hard(simulating winter) and respond well to this treatment. If Buddleia Black Knight plants are not hard-pruned they get quite large and rather twiggy by their third season. The flowers are very fragrant. Buddleia Black Knight can be kept blooming from Spring to Fall by deadheading or cutting the flowers. This can become quite a task on a 8-10 foot bush. Unfortunately the flowers do not drop on their own very quickly.
