Quercus durata - Leather Oak
Quercus durata grows to be a small tree topping out at 15 feet or less, an excellent attribute for many smaller gardens. The Leather Oak works well as a street tree. Quercus durata is easily shaped and can be quite sculptural. I like using these small trees as a miniature forest. Quercus durata is native to the Coast Ranges of California and often can be found in serpentine soils that are heavy clay and mineral defecient. Quercus durata is exceptionally drought tolerant. Quercus durata is a host for the Hedgerow Hairstreak, Mournful Duskywing butterflies and the Western Tussock Moth Caterpillar.
