Phlomis lanata - Woolly Jerusalem Sage
Phlomis lanata is a wonderful source of yellow flowers in the sunny, drought tolerant, garden. Phlomis lanata will grow to 2-3 feet tall and as much as 4-5 feet wide. The small woolly leaves set off the striking yellow sage-like blossoms. Phlomis lanata is in bloom from Spring through Fall with the heaviest blooming period being in the late Spring and early Summer. Phlomis lanata is native to Crete and fits naturally with other Mediterranean plants in the landscape. Winter chill becomes a problem for Phlomis lanata in the mid to high teens. While I trim off the spent blossoms of the other Jerusalem sages, there are so many on Phlomis lanata that I often forgo this task, though the plants look much better if it is done each Summer.
