Pavonia praemorsa - Yellow Mallow
Pavonia praemorsa is a free flowering medium sized shrub for sun or shade. The Yellow Mallow can get to 6 feet or more in height. Pavonia praemorsa flowers fade from orange to yellow as they open. I have grown Pavonia praemorsa in heavy soils and in sharply draining sandy soils. As long as the soil is not soggy the Yellow Mallow can do well. This South African native can withstand winter temperatures that dip into the mid-20°s F. Pavonia praemorsa can form a thick screen in sunny locations but tends to flop a bit in the shade. Pavonia praemorsa is a nectar source for the Spring migrating Painted Lady Butterfly and a larval food as well for the White Checkered Skipper and Northern White Skipper, a great addition to the butterfly garden.
