Pavonia missionum - Red Mallow
Pavonia missionum is a small loose shrub. My Red Mallows have been quite successful in full sun. I give them a spartan diet of water, ample organic material and watch them bloom in spectacular fashion. This small red flowered hibiscus relative can survive Winters that dip into the high teens for brief periods. I have grown them in well drained soils and heavy soils. They seem to prefer the heavier soils. Pavonia missionum is a nectar source for the Painted Lady Butterfly and a larval food for White Checkered Skipper and Northern White Skipper and a great addition to the butterfly garden
