Gaillardia grandiflora - Blanketflower
Gaillardia grandiflora is an eyecatcher when in bloom with its yellow tipped red ray flowers. The Blanketflower is a short-lived perennial. Gaillardia grandiflora is a hybrid of midwestern species. The Blanketflower will bloom for a much longer period if the spent flowers are removed The birds like the seeds so if you are trying to encourage them in your garden the flowers can be scattered around the plants after they have been removed. Blanketflower starts blooming in May in our area and continues through to Fall. Gaillardia grandiflora grows in full sun and requires drainage. Plants grow 18"- 2 feet tall and wide. Gaillardia grandiflora is Winter hardy to zone 3. The Painted Lady Butterfly, California Dogface, White Checkered Skipper, Northern White Skipper, Great Purple Hairstreak, California Common Ringlet, Mormon Metalmark, and Common Buckeye Butterflies are common visitors.
