Camellia japonica Chandleri Elegans
Camellias do their best in light shade or eastern exposures near the coast and require more protection inland. I have seen them survive places that I would not have thought possible. Then merely surviving is not usually our criteria for having a plant. We want it to thrive. Camellia's like slightly acid soil, regular but not excessive water but with greater frequency than do the oaks that they are often planted under. Chandleri Elegans is one of the few Camellia's with a delicate scent. The pink flowers of Camellia chandleri elegans are large and elegant to be sure. Camellia Chandleri Elegans will have fewer fungal proglems if the flowers are picked up as they fall and flowers showing fungal damage, browning like in the lower image, are removed.
