Alyogyne huegelii Santa Cruz ~ Blue Hibiscus
Alyogyne hueglii Santa Cruz is an open showy shrub. The Blue Hibiscus prefers full sun and soil with good drainage. Alyogyne Santa Cruz looks a lot more tender and tropical than it really is and is almost always covered with these purple flowers, but with a name like this I put it on our blue flowers list regardless. The foliage on Blue Hibiscus plants tends to get rather sparse if they do not get adequate soil and water. I have had plants survive winters where the temperatures dipped into the low 20°s F. The plants are native to Australia. Alyogyne Santa Cruz is a nectar source for the Painted Lady Butterfly, White Checkered Skipper, and the Northern White Skipper and is a great addition to the butterfly garden.
