Lobelia cardinalis - Cardinal Flower
Lobelia cardinalis has a long blooming season from Summer until frost. The Cardinal Flower is native seeps and moist stream bank locations in the deserts of California and through much of North America. Lobelia cardinalis is great choice for the hummingbird garden as well as for a butterfly garden. Lobelia cardinalis grows in a slowly spreading clump, typically 18-24" tall. I give ours a good haircut in the winter when the red flowered stalks start to give out. Snails love the Cardinal Flower. Plant in moist but not soggy soil.
