Heliotropium Black Beauty * Black Beauty Heliotrope
Heliotropium Black Beauty is a third smaller than the species. I find the Black Beauty Heliotrope is a little less fragrant as well. But Heliotropium Black Beauty is more tolerant of full sun and the rich dark purple flowers work like a magnet for the eye. The Black Beauty Heliotrope is well worth the trouble to use it as an annual where the climate is not accommodating. Heliotropium arborescens can be planted in full sun near the coast but prefers some protection inland. Heliotrope will do quite well in the banana belt sections of the inland valleys. Plants are hardy into the high 20°s F. Regular water and decent drainage are a requirement. The Sara Orangetip and California Common Ringlet will periodically drop by for some nectar.
