Delphinium occidentale * Western Larkspur, Duncecap Larkspur
Delpinium occidentale is a tall perennial with dark purple to blue flowers. The Western Larkspur is native to the Rocky Mountains and into the Northwest. Delpinium occidentale grows in moist meadows, seeps and along streambanks. The Duncecap Larkspur blooms from late Spring into Summer. Delpinium occidentale is poisonous enough that it is dangerous to cattle. Sheep are less vulnerable and are used to clear larkspur so the land can be used by cattle. Delpinium occidentale is often included in wildflower seed packs and seeds may be hybrids of several other Larkspurs. Delpinium occidentale blooms from late Spring into Summer. Delpinium occidentale attracts Western Tiger Swallowtail and Pale Swallowtail Butterflies and is a nice addition to the butterfly garden. Delpinium occidentale grows in full sun or shade.
