Calycanthus occidentalis is native to much of the mountainous west. The spice bush grows in forest margins on good well drained soil. The large shrub will provide an excellent screen if the soil is fertile and the moisture adequate. The bark was used as a cinnamon substitute. Calycanthus occidentalis blooms in the late Spring and into early Summer with long lasting deep red flowers. Calycanthus occidentalis will bloom better in full sun near the coast but will perform better inland in a shaded part of the garden. Spice bush plants spread slowly with runners. Propagation can be by division or seeds. Calycanthus occidentalis is hardy to -15° F.
