Calothamnus quadrifidus - One Sided Bottle Brush
Calothamnus quadrifidus holds well and is spectacular as a cut flower. The red flowers come on second year wood, on just one side of the branch. One Sided Bottle Brush has a long blooming season, from late Winter into Summer. Calothamnus quadrifidus is not picky about soil conditions, growing in clay to sand, and even putting up with coastal conditions. While water is not so much a problem, drought or no drought. Fertilizer will mess Calothamnus quadrifidus up, they come from a low phosphorus environment and will readily burn if fertilized. The One Sided Bottle Brush is cold hardy into the low teen's° F or lower. Calothamnus grows slowly to 6-8 feet. The silver hairs on the leaves make for a contrast with the deep red flowers. Calothamnus quadrifidus is a great plant for attracting hummingbirds as I am sure you can imagine from the color of their flowers.
