Pentas lanceolata Kaleidoscope Appleblossom - Star Clusters
Pentas lanceolata Kaleidoscope Appleblossom is spectacular in the butterfly garden and a great nectar source for the California Dogface Butterfly, Gulf Frittilary, Painted Lady, Western Tiger Swallowtail and the Pale Tiger Swallowtail and others. But Pentas plants are frost tender and a bit thirsty. Give plenty of water but don't leave them soggy and this perennial is good to go sun or shade. Pentas lanceolata Kaleidoscope Appleblossom is tender at 32° F and is often grown as an annual in colder areas. I grow the Star Clusters in frost free shade gardens. In the greenhouse they tend to attract whitefly. Whitefly is much less of a problem in the gardens as the whiteflies are bothered by wind. Pentas lanceolata Kaleidoscope Appleblossom grows 2-4 feet tall and wide with clusters of pink flowers at the tips of the branches. Because Pentas lanceolata Kaleidoscope Appleblossom is so good at attracting butterflies this plant is often used as a focal point plant in a container.
