Lyonothamnus floribundus - Catalina Ironwood
Lyonothamnus floribundus is a mid to large sized tree growing up to 60 feet tall, usually taller than wide. The Catalina Ironwood is native to the Channel Islands off the Southern California coast. Lyonothamnus performs best in full sun with dry summers once established but will still bloom in a moderately shady garden. The Catalina Ironwood is noted for the gray peeling bark, the new bark is a deep red, its open branching structure, and for palmately divided leaves that vaguely resemble something that up until recently has been illegal. Lyonothamnus floribundus is a slow growing tree. Lyonothamnus floribundus blooms with white flowers in late Spring and early Summer. The Catalina Ironwood is Winter hardy into the mid teens.
