Gelsemium sempervirens - Carolina Jessamine
Gelsemium sempervirens is a fragrant and beautiful addition to the garden. The Carolina Jessamine grows at a moderate pace. For a vine that is a compliment. Gelsemium sempervirens will tolerate low water conditions though it will often drop much of the foliage when this happens. Carolina Jessamine has yellow flowers in Full Sun to light shade. Blooming in the shade is actually one of this vine's strong points. Gelsemium sempervirens grows well in moderately to well drained soils and usually sulks are wastes away in heavy or soggy soils. Gelsemium sempervirens is moderately Winter hardy tolerating bouts with frost that dip into the low teens and reportedly somewhat colder for short durations. The Carolina Jessamine blooms in our area from late Winter through much of the Spring. Like many plants used medicinally, Gelsemium sempervirens is toxic if ingested in significant quantities.
