Eriophyllum confertiflorum * Golden Yarrow
Eriophyllum confertiflorum is a great plant for the dry garden due to the early and long lasting blooming season. This small herbaceous shrub starts blooming in the late winter and continues through most of the spring. Eriophyllum confertiflorum grows primarily on east facing slopes on well drained soils or in lightly shaded areas. I like it for its brilliant golden yellow flowers as well as for the finely dissected gray foliage. Eriophyllum is recognizable enough that I can see it while buzzing down the highway doing my double nickle botany and take a little joy at knowing what I saw. Eriophyllum confertiflorum is a great addition to the Butterfly Garden attracting the Painted Lady Butterfly, Great Purple Hairstreak, Hedgerow Hairstreak, California Common Ringlet, Mormon Metalmark, Northern White Skipper, Variable Checkerspot, and the White Checkered Skipper.
