Cuphea ignea ~ Cigar Plant, Firecracker Plant
Cuphea ignea is one of those plants that can mostly be planted and enjoyed, with little or no maintenance required. Cuphea ignea will bloom in full sun or even moderate shade. The Cigar Plant grows 18-24" tall and slowly spreads by underground runners. I shear off the Cigar Plants nearly to the ground each Winter or if Cuphea ignea flops. Overhead water can knock the Cigar plants down. Cuphea ignea blooms with tubular orange red flowers from early in the Spring until frost takes it down. Cuphea ignea is root hardy down into the low teens. Cuphea ignea is a parent to the variety Cuphea David Verity. Cuphea David Verity has many of the same characteristics except it is more than twice the size of Cuphea ignea.
