Coreopsis gigantea ~ Giant Coreopsis
Coreopsis gigantea is strikingly unusual when not in bloom and spectacular when blooming. The Giant Coreopsis has buttery yellow flowers in the late winter through early Spring. Coreopsis gigantea grows a long snakelike stem that twists and curves with an explosion of foliage at the top. The Giant Coreopsis is native to the Southern California coastal region and the Channel Islands. It is frost tender and requires good drainage. But where this plant really stands out is where it is found growing right on the coast. It is often a difficult area to find plants that will tolerate the salt and wind. Coreopsis is a plant for the Butterfly Garden attracting the Great Purple Hairstreak, Painted Lady and Mormon Metalmark
