Koelreuteria paniculata - Golden Rain Tree
Koelreuteria paniculata is a fast growing tree to 30 feet. The Golden Rain tree blooms Spring into Summer. The yellow flowers are beautiful, the inflated seedpods too. Koelreuteria paniculata can be messy, raining seedlings, flowers and debris. The seedlings are easy enough to dispatch though there can be a whole lot of them if they find open soil. In a lawn seedlings can be mowed. Koelreuteria paniculata is drought tolerant, hardy enough for inland plantings and not too mean to driveways and patios. The leaves of Koelreuteria paniculata turn to yellow in the Fall. I mulch heavily under the Golden Rain Trees to discourage seedlings and to make it easier to pull the ones that persist. Koelreuteria paniculata can get top heavy and will require periodic thinning to keep it from dropping branches that would ruin its shape.
