Sidalcea malviflora - Checker

Sidalcea malviflora is a late Spring blooming perennial California native. Checker is widely tolerant of different soil types often being found in grasslands, ditches, and other disturbed sites. Sidalcea malviflora requires significantly less than normal Summer garden water. Sidalcea malviflora blooms later in the Spring with its pink flowers often contrasting with dried grass. Checker will hunker down for the summer retaining just the lower rosette of leaves unless it gets really dire and it will cast those off as well. Sidalcea malviflora is a larval food for Spring Azure, and Hairstreak Butterflies as well as other butterflies in that group.
