Lobelia excelsa - Devil's Tobacco

Lobelia excelsa is a quick growing and long blooming shrub. Devil's Tobacco blooms from Spring into Fall with fiery orange red flowers. Lobelia excelsa grows to 6 feet tall and wide, often producing new shoots from the base. The Devil's Tobacco will become a more shapely shrub with light pruning. Lobelia excelsa needs little help once established being both drought and fog tolerant. Lobelia excelsa grows in a wide range of soils and does best in a sunny spot in the garden. Hummingbirds and butterflies, including the Western Tiger Swallowtail, Painted Lady, Cloudless Sulfur, and Monarch Butterflies are attracted to the flowers. Lobelia excelsa is Winter hardy to 15-20° F.
