Encelia californica ~ California Brittle Bush, Coast Sunflower

Encelia californica is often found on the slopes near the coast. The California Brittle Bush is often included in seed mixes used for repairing slopes and road shoulders. Encelia californica is typically 3 feet tall and grows to 4 or 5 feet wide. The Coast Sunflower blooms almost all year, but the best blooming periods are in the Spring and Fall when yellow flowers with dark centers put on a great show. Encelia californica is tolerant of a wide variety of soils, but must dry out some between irrigation cycles. Encelia californica will naturally cross with Encelia farinosa if both are planted nearby. Encelia californica is frost tender. Encelia californica attracts the Monarch, Common Buckeye, Painted Lady, Cloudless Sulfur, Gray Hairstreak, White Checkered Skipper, Northern White Skipper, California Common Ringlet, Mormon Metalmark, Giant Swallowtail, and Spring Azure Butterflies.
