Cyrtomium falcatum - Japanese Holly Fern

Cyrtomium falcatum grows with arched fronds growing 18"-2 feet tall from a slowly expanding rhizomatous base. The Japanese Holly Fern stands out with the thick leathery pinnae that resemble holly leaves. Cyrtomium falcatum does well in shade and can tolerate some partial sun. Cyrtomium falcatum needs decent drainage or the rhizomes will rot. Cyrtomium falcatum is native to much of eastern Asia and Hawaii. For a fern Cyrtomium falcatum is quite drought tolerant with those leathery leaves often getting by being watered once a week through the summer.
