Camassia quamash ~ Camas
Camassia quamash grows well in the garden and has a history of being an important food source. Camas grows in meadows, rocky outcrops, and open woodlands at elevations between 2000 and 8000 feet. Camassia quamash grows 1-2 feet tall, leaves at the base and a slender flower stalk. Camas blooms Spring into early Summer. Cassia quamash is often found in a moist meadow but will tolerate a variety of soil conditions including clay. In the garden prefers moist well drained, well mulched soils and dry Summer conditions. Camas thrives on moist Winter and Spring conditions and dry Summer soils.
