Leucophyta brownii * Calocephalus brownii * Cushion Bush

Leucophyta brownii has been known in the trade for a long time as Calocephalus brownii. Leucophyta brownii is a plant I use when Artemisia Powis Castle or Santolina chamaecyparissus are not white enough or require too much care. The Cushion Bush is a short-lived perennial that has a wiry texture. Leucophyta brownii stays nearly white and often grows to 12" tall and 3' across. Typical life spans for the Cushion Bush in my gardens has been 2-3 years with a few plants lasting longer. I have not had any problems with cold at temperatures above 25° F. I have had plants die off suddenly with heavy soils. I have stressed it with dry conditions and the plant performs well for several years. If you are looking for an unusual texture to add to to the gray garden Leucophyta brownii is a plant to try.
