Allium howellii var howellii grows up to a foot tall. The flower heads of Howell's Onion can get to an inch. Allium howellii var howellii grows in well drained soil in a grassland setting. Howell's Onion can be planted by seed or bulbs. Seed planting is best done in the Fall with the first significant rains. Plant bulbs with about an inch of soil over the top. Allium howellii is native to California and common around the Carrizo Plain. Two other varieties Allium howellii clokeyi grows on granite soils and Allium howellii sanbenitense grows on serpentine soils.
