Wildflower Garden from Seed

A wildflower garden from seed. There are two lists the first is California native plants that start fairly easily from seed. The second list is a list of pretty weeds, many of which are often in wildflower seed packets. Wildflower packets can have seed from anywhere, as you might guess this is a pet peeve of mine. Many of these plants are noxious weeds if left to their own devices, and there is certainly a danger that they might escape into whatever wild spaces might be nearby . . . beware.

When planting California natives when I want sure success I plant California poppies and a couple of species of annual lupines, Lupinus microcarpus densiflorus and Lupinus succulentus. Others will grow if they are placed in the proper locations at the right time and the rains come as expected. Not so sure that rains ever come as expected. Solid shade plants include Chinese Houses, Collinsia heterophylla, and Woodland Clarkia, Clarkia unguiculata. Oenothera hookeri can fill space like no other, one plant will make you a thousand more.

Speaking of one plant making a thousand more any of the pretty weeds all have the potential to do the same. These plants are great for filling in space in a young garden or in a place where you just don't want to water but would really appreciate a plant or two (thousand). Yet I use them with some caution. And even enjoy them. While it is more like herding cats than the controlled idea of planting perennials this can make for a very rewarding garden on a limited budget or with limited effort. The real danger is that many of these plants can get loose in a wild space and choke out the natives, so have some real caution when using them if you are gardening close to an open space
