Succulent and Cactus Garden

This Succulent and Cactus list is growing as I get photos of these drought worthy plants. Succulents have become the go to answer to the drought. While it is far from the only answer it is an effective one. There are plenty of plants besides those that are succulent or cacti that come from environments far harsher than here. Many of them think that our drought was a nice wet season by their standards. For an extensive list of plants appropriate to our climate look at our Drought Tolerant Garden List

Succulents are fantastic for bringing odd and interesting shapes and textures into the garden. Personally I want to be the most dangerous thing in my garden. So I use wicked cactus and thorn filled euphorbias sparingly. But they are striking so I do use them and often as specimens

The flowers are often spectacular colors and extraordinarily ornate. And also often very short lived. They are so photogenic I am drawn to them . . . but carefully. Many of the succulents and cacti have very low tolerance for poorly drained soils. I often use containers to provide adequate drainage. This group often has specific needs for temperatures. Containers help when plants our outside their preferred range. I move them to a shade house, or tuck them up against the structure or a sunny wall to take advantage of the stored heat.
